SUMMARY:Service Project: Sweet Blessing Bags
DESCRIPTION:Our February service project will support the local homeless community through Vigilant Hope. It’s been pretty cold over the last weeks and VH serves a hot breakfast several times a week to share some warmth. We have in the past stocked their shelves with pancake mix\, syrup and assorted supplies to help with their efforts. Now SSC has taken the charge to warm the hearts of those living on the streets. What a great way to let them know that love knows no bounds…and on Valentine’s Day! \nYou are invited to bake cookies or brownies. (No icing or decorations please as bags we prepare will be carried in backpacks.) Not fond of baking? Schedule a little tight? We also want to include a few chocolates in each bag and lip balm. Chocolates should be individually wrapped. Maybe a bag of Hershey Kisses or your favorite chocolate. Lip balm…any kind is good. Maybe choose the one you’d like for yourself. \nBring your home baked treats\, chocolates and lip balm to SSC on February 13th.  After the service we will gather in Fellowship Hall and assemble 40-50 individual bags for distribution at their breakfast on Valentine’s Day. \nSSC will provide the bags and a few other small items. Please plan to attend the service and then stay to put these bags together. The energy with which we give will be felt by all who receive this sweet blessing bag!

SUMMARY:Celebration Of Life - Anne Ohlson
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Anne Ohlson\nMarch 16\, 1960 – July 1\, 2021\n\nElizabeth Anne Ohlson\, mother and beloved friend to all\, passed away peacefully in her home on July 1\, 2021 surrounded by friends and family. Anne was born on March 16\, 1960 in Abingdon\, Virginia. She grew up in Abingdon with her loving family – parents\, Eugene and Elizabeth Ohlson\, her sister Judy Ohlson and her brother\, Michael Ohlson. \nAnne was a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Poughkeepsie\, New York. This is where she developed her passion for baking and creative catering. She moved to Wilmington in 1999 where she began Wildflower Cakes and Pastries. Anne completed her career as a Nutrition Supervisor for New Hanover County Schools where she believed in serving children healthy food\, “one day at a time.” During Anne’s lifetime\, she enjoyed hiking\, walks on the RiverWalk\, and spending time with her daughter. Anne’s greatest accomplishment was the success and happiness of her children\, Eugene and Alison. \nIt would be wrong to say that Anne lost her battle with cancer because she never stopped fighting. No matter how sick she was\, she was always determined. When others may have broken\, Anne stayed strong. Through her\, we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. Just because she is no longer here\, it does not mean she lost her fight. Though Anne’s health was failing\, few people knew the extent to which she struggled. Her joy for life and indomitable spirit kept her pushing through the pain. \nAnne is survived by her brother Michael (Debbie Ohlson)\, nieces Amanda Ohlson and Ashley Greer (Gene Greer)\, and her children Eugene (age 26) and Alison (age 24). \nA Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday\, August 21st\, 1:00pm\, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation\, 4313 Lake Avenue\, Wilmington\, NC. Reception to follow in the fellowship hall. \nAnne’s family asks for fond memories\, funny stories\, or beautiful pictures to be emailed to collinsalisonp@gmail.com in order to reflect\, remember\, and adore Anne and the incomparable person she was. \nIn lieu of flowers\, donations may be made in her honor to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare of New Hanover County.

This is a great time for us to pass along gently-used utensils and other kitchen necessities that might feel like new to someone else. \nThese are the things we are hoping to supply:\nFresh fruit and vegetables\nBlock cheese\nButter\nNew dish towels and dish cloths\nGently-used kitchen utensils\, pans and small appliances. \n \nWe will also be collecting Caring Cards in May. Dropoff for the Caring Cards and kitchen/food donations will be Saturday\, May 15th from 10 till noon at the Unitarian Church\, 4313 Lake Avenue in Wilmington.

DESCRIPTION:The mission of Domestic Violence Shelter and Service is to empower victims and their families to break the cycle of domestic violence by providing shelter and on-going support services\, as well as public awareness and prevention programs. We have another chance to support their effort. Our outreach coordinator and Board member Fran Lucas stays in touch with their team so we can provide for specific needs. DESCRIPTION:Once again we have an opportunity to brighten the day and spread some love to those who need a little help. Celebrate Valentine’s Day by offering your favorite recipe and a favorite bag of chocolate candies to those in our community who cannot afford these simple luxuries. Here’s how it works: \n\nProvide your favorite recipe for cookies or cake. Include all of the ingredients required to bake and ice your dessert. If your recipe requires eggs please provide a minimum ½ dozen. If it requires butter\, please provide at least one full stick (no partial sticks). If it requires oil\, please provide a small unopened bottle. If it requires flour\, sugar\, baking soda\, icing\, chocolate chips\, nuts\, toppings etc\, please provide unopened containers/bags from the grocery store. A prepared box mix is welcome or something made from scratch. Just be sure that you provide all of the ingredients necessary to prepare and ice your dessert. Simple\, fun\, easy recipes are preferred.\nIn addition\, please include your favorite bag of Valentine’s candy…Hershey Kisses\, hearts\, etc.\nDrop off your Sweet Tooth Bag on Saturday\, February 13th at 4313 Lake Avenue between 10am-noon.\n\nOur gifts will be distributed at St Jude’s Food Pantry the week of February 14th. I am excited to think that the smell of fresh baked cookies or cake will remind our brothers and sisters that they are loved.

SUMMARY:Service Project - Vigilant Hope
DESCRIPTION:The homeless population served by Vigilant Hope was so very appreciative of the coats\, gloves\, hats and scarves we provided in October. Now we’ve been asked to step in again…this time to help feed a warm breakfast to these folks during this winter weather. Twice a week volunteers at Vigilant Hope provide a warm breakfast for about 100 people. The supplies they need are basic and essential…something we can easily provide. This seemingly small gesture makes a big difference to those in need. Thank you for your loving support of our community. \nPancake mix – water added type only \nSyrup – any and all flavors \nOranges and bananas \nGift cards to Sam’s\, Costco or other grocery store – because they have limited refrigerated storage…they use these to purchase eggs\, bacon and sausage as needed. \nDrop off your donation at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation \n4313 Lake Avenue\, Wilmington  \nbetween 10am and noon on Saturday\, January 16th. \nSee you there!
