Remember when you were a child and someone would ask you how old you were? You weren’t just 9 years old. You were “9 and a half!” Oh that half. It meant something. You were on the brink! The leading edge! That half represented where you have been and where you are going. It meant growth, opportunity, and the hopeful unknown. We weren’t scared to turn 10, we were PUMPED. The unknown didn’t stir up fear or anxiety, it birthed excitement, creativity, and ideas.

As adults, can we say the same? Are we still free flowing down the river of life, soaking up experiences? Hardly. I see so many of us, (and I say US because I am also super guilty of this!) attempting to control our fate, planning and then over planning. Overthinking, worrying, trying to decide something…anything. Checking and then double checking. Writing and re-writing. Ewww.

How exhausting. But more importantly, how not fun. At what age did we decide to put fun on the back burner? Like, “when everything else is done, I can have fun again.” Yikes.

STOP THAT. All of us. You’re missing it. You’re missing your life! We get this tiny little blink-of-an-eye human experience and we spend it wrapped up in image, weight, bills, and wondering what other people are thinking.

What are YOU thinking? Remember you? Not the adult you. The real you. The you that truly believed if you could get that swing high enough, your sneakers would kick the moon. The you who fell off your bicycle, and laughed, feeling like a supercharged stunt devil. The you who licked the brownie batter soaked beaters, the one who showed off scrapes and cuts with pride, the one who hung up your paintings like they were the Mona Lisa, and the one who didn’t care one bit about the unknown. It only meant adventure. You had an unspoken, subconscious TRUST in all that was around you. And I don’t just mean the grown-ups. Yeah, they were okay. I mean SPIRITUALLY. You had faith…real faith…before you even knew what faith was.

SO LEAP. Dive. Trust.

Apply for that job you told yourself you couldn’t get. Wear your hair like that. Put on the crop top. High five again. Break out the Yahtzee. Swim underwater. Dust off the roller skates. Paint. Show off your passions! And fall down. I promise, you will get back up and have one gnarly cool scar to show off around the campfire.
