When I’m caught between a rock and a hard place
Let me be water
Let me be water
Let me be water
John Roedel
So, what are those rocks and hard places? After sitting with this for a few days, (maybe longer) I decided they represent the inner and the outer. The rock is the consequence. It is what I deal with in the world. The hard place is in me. It’s how I feel. It feels tight because there is risk and there is uncertainty in the place in between. On one side is my authentic self and on the other side is the consequence of staying true to me.
- If I voice my opinion, I will lose the love and respect of my family. I will no longer be accepted.
- If I tell the truth, I’ll lose my freedom, be rejected and judged.
- If I make a different choice, life as I know it will be over.
In this place of risk and uncertainty, John’s advice in the poem is…let me be water. Let me soften. Let my thoughts move with ease. Let me release my anxiety and just breathe.
What happens from there? Clarity. Isn’t that what you really want when you’re between a rock and a hard place? Clarity.
Let me be water.
