We tend to run from any kind of discomfort. We all know life is full of discomfort…disappointment, frustration, grief, heartache, loss…hurts of all kinds. Because it just is, because it’s life. Life is full of possibilities and full of obstacles. Sometimes it feels totally out of control, a whirlwind. Other times it’s like the smooth glass-like surface of a lake; so, so, still. Other times it just feels wretched.

Life is uncertain. That about covers it. Uncertain. No guarantees. No safe path. So, when we try to run from discomfort, we are running from life. Consider that for a moment. Consider how brave and real it is to be with life, no matter what. To have the experience of discomfort without apology. To feel it without running from it or trying to fix it. Maybe even to be curious about it.

A dear friend of mine is experiencing the discomfort of aging. She is unable to engage in the world the way she did for most of her life. Her mind and her body are not cooperating. The difficult days arrive as often as the easier ones. Even though she doesn’t like it, she is learning to accept her limitations. She has invited a new perspective by being curious. Curious about her life. How to be present to what is, without judgment or regret. How to feel satisfied. She is reading a book that is reminding her to be grateful and to consider a wider perspective.

There is no running from discomfort. The brave ones stay curious. They reach inside and they reach out for help when they need it. I am grateful for my friend and her willingness to stay curious. She is one of the brave ones.

With great humility
Paula
