From poet John Roedel: “I have no patience for people who can watch the world burn and never wonder: How do I become rain?”

It is a vivid idea. Powerful and gentle. I want it to be personal and immediate. I don’t want to just have a good feeling about it. I want to use it in my life. So, here is my version: I see the world burning and I wonder: How do I become rain?

Really, how do I become rain? How do I soothe the burn, be the balm, nourish what is beneath the flames? That’s a high calling…to not run from the flames. How do I become rain? What is the balm for a burning world?

I think we all know the answer. The rain is love and hope and patience. It is generosity, kindness and presence. Rain is a deep breath. It is forgiveness and second chances. It is a pause, not a sudden leap.

I can help soothe and nourish this burning world. Be the balm, Paula. Be the rain.

With great humility
Paula
